Theory of sexual orientation by A.Kinsey, pioneer of human sexuality research, creator of the Kinsey scale and known as “the father of the sexual revolution”. Kinsey marked a before an after in understanding sexual orientation.
I think it’s important to mention the difference between sexual orientation and sexual preference. When today we speak of sexual orientation, we refer to the affective, romantic, sexual and psychological attraction that the person feels in a sustained way over time. On the other hand, we refer to sexual preference as a degree of choice, which determines a person’s sexual life by establishing a sex as the object of desire. However, agreement or disagreement refers to the relationship or similarity between sexual preference and sexual orientation.
As I have mentioned, Alfred Kinsey created the scale, which wear his name, to show that sexuality is not reduced to two only categories: homosexual and heterosexual. Rather, Kinsey believed that sexuality is fluid and subject to change over time. This, also called the “Heterosexual–Homosexual Rating Scale“, is used in research to describe a person’s sexual orientation based on one’s experience or response at a given time.
Moreover, Alfred Kinsey’s publications on human sexuality, “Sexual Behaviour in the Human Male” (1948) and “Sexual Behaviour in the Human Female” (1953), were widely publicised and had a great impact on modern society sexuality’s conceptions after the World War. II.
THE DEGREES OF SEXUAL ORIENTATION
Until then, only three degrees of sexual orientation were recognised; heterosexual, bisexual and homosexual. However, the Kinsey scale ranges from 0, exclusively heterosexual, to 6, exclusively homosexual, and 1 to 5 for those who had different levels of desire or experiences with both sexes, including “incidental” or “occasional” desire for same-sex sexual activity. The Kinsey scale gave a grading in sexual orientation, establishing degrees of bisexuality.
The study was very novel for the time since it reflected such diversity and moved away from the then commonly accepted mono-sexuality. Many sexologists view the Kinsey scale as relevant to sexual orientation, but not comprehensive enough to cover all aspects of sexual identity. Measures of sexual orientation do not always correlate with people’s self-identification labels. As such, sexual identity involves more than one component and can also involve biological sex and gender identity. What is undeniable is that his research and findings encouraged gay men and lesbians to come out and men debunking much of the stigma surrounding homosexuality.
